Both shotcrete and poured concrete can achieve similar strength levels. The key difference between the two is in the application process. Both gunite and shotcrete consist of a mix of sand, aggregate (sand and small rocks) and Portland cement (a combination of roasted limestone and other materials). It’s when the water is introduced to the mix that determines whether it’s gunite or shotcrete.
For gunite, water is added to the dry concrete mix at the gun-shaped nozzle opening (hence the name “gunite”). The concrete is made in the air right before hitting its target.
Shotcrete is different in that it is trucked to your property wet in a cement truck. The water and dry mix are combined prior to arrival and shot out of a nozzle premixed and ready to go.
Shotcrete is simply a method of placing concrete at high velocity – when properly executed the final product is equivalent or superior to formed concrete. No special design considerations are required.
Shotcrete mix designs can be proportioned to meet specified performance requirements including chloride, sulphate, and freeze/thaw resistance.
As with any type of concrete placement, qualified installers, material suppliers, and quality control practices are required to ensure the overall quality of the shotcrete. Shotcrete is covered in ACI 506 as well as 318.
